Webring fragments
Webrings were part directory, part doorbell. The buttons promised that the next page would be related, and sometimes it even was.

Small rules
Most rings had rules about the navigation bar staying visible. People moved the bar anyway. Sometimes it lived at the bottom under twelve badges, three awards, and a guestbook link that had already died.
The interesting part is the "found you through" trail. Guestbook entries often name the ring more reliably than the pages preserved the ring code.
